:nhab:t Architects Studio attended the UN-Habitat #Habitat3 conference in Pretoria on 7 & 8 April 2016.  Addressing urban issues relating to the plight of the bottom billion, the thematic discussions presented relevant exchange on urbanisation as primary cause as well as a range of suggestions to effect change by halting and reducing the resultant Shack Urbanity.

Tenure security was raised in many forums as means to address issues of vulnerability and poverty, taking account of land availability and policy and legal frameworks to facilitate formalising the claim to space of these marginalised citizens.  The #NewUrbanAgenda to be adopted in Quito in October, will guide housing development globally for the next 20 years with a focus on upgrading, incrementalism and people driven processes with the agreement that participatory approaches and partnerships are key for the success of this goal.

The (re)search(ers) at :nhab:t made recommendations to the Pretoria Declaration, for the approaches to upgrading, based on first hand experience with on-the-ground realities of intervention projects.  The use of an in-house purpose-designed tool has assisted with charting of projects as they unfold and seeks a verticality in the final data-motif with the aim of keeping a coalition of discourses of all participants. This comes as response to the understanding that all change agents come from vastly diverse start points and also addresses the gap that exists between discussions of approach and policy for upgrading and intervention projects and the realpolitik of actual implementation.
